ShelterKraft Werks in Seattle has the pick of the litter with unused shipping containers that come into port. The containers, which are made of sturdy Corteen steel, are costly to melt down and recycle, which is part of the reason there are so many leftover. The company specializes in building container homes, studios and other commercial projects depending on what the customer’s needs are.
Among their offerings are 4 stock model home options from 320 sq ft up to 640 sq ft with prices starting at $35,000 for the smaller and $72,000 for the largest. They can also design and build custom homes and add on features like renewable energy systems, rainwater collection, composting toilets, siding, roofs and upgraded interior finishes. The homes can be painted with reflective paint and all construction features spray foam insulation and a tight thermal envelope.
ShelterKraft Werks coordinates with a local contractor to deal with site preparations and connect to utilities. Fabrication happens in their facility in Seattle and completed projects are then shipped on standard trucks and can even be shipped by rail for a lower carbon intensive transportation option.
